Lesson 1- Concepts and an Overview of Money Laundering legislation (FICA – Financial Intelligence Centre Act)

Welcome to FICA

South Africa is on the Grey List, and FICA, the Financial Intelligence Centre Act, is a cornerstone of South Africa’s efforts to combat financial crime, including money laundering, tax evasion, and the financing of terrorism. Under FICA, all accountable institutions, such as banks, estate agents, attorneys, and other financial service providers, are legally required to verify the identity and address of their clients through a process known as “Know Your Customer” (KYC), This includes collecting valid identification documents, proof of address, and source of income, in addition to conducting risk-based assessments of clients. FICA compliance helps to ensure transparency in financial transactions and strengthens the integrity of South Africa’s financial system. Failure to comply with FICA requirements can result in serious penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
